One of my favorite places in Saratoga is bustling long before the sun rises. The backside of the Saratoga Racecourse and Horse Haven on the Oklahoma side of Union Avenue in Saratoga are the places where thoroughbreds are stabled, trained, cared for, and bathed.

Trainers, stable hands, farriers and exercise riders all get right to the business at hand in the dark cool predawn hours of every racing day. Watching the horses workout on the track as they emerge from the morning mists feels private and intimate. Even more so the tranquil hand grazing and baths that the thoroughbreds enjoy each day. As the day brightens and the mists burn off, the horses are returned to their clean stalls and some of them wait for their moment in the starting gates.

For anyone lucky enough to be there, it’s time for another cup of coffee at the cafe nestled between the barns, and for a look at the newspaper before all the quiet chores give way to furious racing!
